These poems are like spinning lighted tops spreading light on sights and scenes I am familiar with. They are as familiar as the red bird singing to me from the creek bottom first thing in the morning. The words the prose are as familiar to me as those I read by the masters in school years ago. These poems by Janisse are certainly new and original and strike a chord of warmth and recognition in my Scotch-Irish-English soul. I thought I had escaped the confines of modern poetry but it appears that I have not. I have heard similar strains in the poetry of masters long dead. But Janis' poetry is not dead but alive with the warmth and understanding of the natural world around her. These poems come through her pen by way of the mind and heart. This is the first book I have read of Mrs. Ray. She is child of the south; even more a child of South Georgia. She makes you feel like you are in the boat with her as she writes the mighty Altamaha river and its basin. I look forward to reading some of her other books.
